Full-time staff writer at Manistee News Advocate

On Oct. 6, 2014, I started a full-time position at the Manistee News Advocate in Manistee, Mich. covering the city and courts beats along with other stories as well as being responsible for gathering the stories and information for the Reasons to Celebrate and Entertainment pages, respectively.

So far I’ve covered some city council meetings — which actually turned out to be really interesting — as well as some larger stories about brownfield redevelopment in town. I’m learning a lot and really liking the new job.

I’ll be updating my Manistee News Advocate page on my blog with links to stories, however, in order to read the full version you must subscribe to either a print copy or digital edition of the paper. You can also view my page on the newspaper’s website here.

Last semester at CMU, working at CM Life

I should be graduating this semester from Central Michigan University in May with a Bachelor’s degree in News-Editorial journalism.

In the meantime, I’m working at Central Michigan Life on the University desk as a senior reporter.

Here’s a couple stories I’ve already done for CM Life this semester:

“Eating disorder help in focus after revelation of student’s death” here.

“Inspiration by gunpoint: Childhood shooting sparks creativity, tenacity in Lake Orion student” here. This piece I’m particularly proud of. It was really well done and really well received among the CMU community and by my peers at CM Life.

I’m also working on a few longer-term stories for the paper and a few shorter term stories too. Lots of good stuff happening. Classes are going well too.

JRN 516: Isabella County Courts beat presentation

For my Public Affairs Reporting class at CMU, I am covering the Isabella County court system and had to put together an outline of the beat, its inner workings, the people, places, institutions within it and more.

Below is a link to the Powerpoint presentation:

Finally coming together

After a long time of collecting clips in a notebook, I decided to make a site for myself to digitally collect everything too. I’ll still keep the notebook, sure, but this website is a pretty comprehensive collection of everything I’ve done as a journalist up to this point. It features my best work, my ventures in music journalism, regular journalism, interviewing and more.

I’ll be posting stories I write over the course of the semester here, too. Maybe some photos from concerts I go to as well (if I remember to bring my camera).

A site like this is something that’s gotten away from me as life (school, mainly) has gotten in the way and I’ve finally taken a few days to put it together.

I know there’s still a bit of work to be done on the site, which will be taken care of soon but what do you think of my site? Do you think it could be improved? If so, how so? Let me know!

Thanks,

Sean

ps. I had the urge (for some reason) to re-watch All the President’s Men the other night. I love that movie. It’s everything about journalism I love. I might expound on this in a future blog post.
